Objectives: This study aimed to examine the extent to which persuasive design components are incorporated into the websites of central libraries affiliated with Iranian universities of medical sciences under the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, and to provide recommendations for improving these websites.
Method: This applied study employed a descriptive-survey approach. The study population consisted of the websites of 55 central libraries of Iranian universities of medical sciences, all of which were examined using a census method. Data were collected using a persuasive design checklist comprising 72 items across eight dimensions: credibility, privacy, personalization, attractiveness, solicitation, priming, ascendency, and commitment. The websites were evaluated and ranked according to the extent to which these components were implemented.
Findings: The results showed variation in the implementation of persuasive design components across the websites. Tabriz University of Medical Sciences obtained the highest score (60%) and ranked first, followed by the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in second place. Shahid Beheshti, Ahvaz Jundishapur, Bushehr, and Babol Universities of Medical Sciences were also among the higher-ranked universities. Among the eight dimensions, attractiveness had the highest level of presence (74%), whereas ascendency had the lowest (1%). None of the websites achieved a score above 75%; therefore, none reached the desirable level.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that greater attention has been paid to attractiveness in library website design, whereas components related to user interaction, personalization, and ascendency have received less attention. More systematic application of persuasive design principles and collaboration between web designers and information science specialists may contribute to more effective website redesign, greater user engagement, and improved web-based library services.
