Background and Objectives: Under the influence of the knowledge-based economy, entrepreneurship has become very important as the ability to identify and choose suitable opportunities to create new business and further economic prosperity. Identifying entrepreneurial opportunity is the turning point of the activities that take place to turn an idea into capital. Many researchers have introduced identifying entrepreneurial opportunities as an important element in the entrepreneurial process.
Most experts consider an entrepreneur as someone who identifies, evaluates and exploits an opportunity. Given the role of identifying entrepreneurial opportunity in the transformation of knowledge into capital in the current information-based economy, it is necessary to conduct studies on the variables influencing the identification of entrepreneurial opportunity and to advance the process of commercialization of current knowledge in science production centers such as universities. Hence, the present study aims to provide a causal model of the relationship between media literacy, entrepreneurial alertness and identifying entrepreneurial opportunities in Payam-e Noor University to examine the direct and indirect effects of media literacy components on entrepreneurial opportunities considering the mediating role of the components of entrepreneurial alertness.
Methodology: The present study is an applied research in terms of aim and descriptive in terms of data collection method. It uses the path analysis method to examine the effects of media literacy (exogenous variable) on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities (dependent variable) among students studying at the technical and vocational girl school of Shiraz. For this purpose, among 780 students studying in the second semester of 2022, 258 people were selected as a sample with the help of Cochran's table. But due to the possibility of non-cooperation of some students, 300 questionnaires were distributed. The data collection tool is a questionnaire, which included the media literacy subscale of Adlipour, Ghasemi, Mir Mohammadpour (2013), identifying entrepreneurial opportunities subscale of Pohakka (2010) and entrepreneurial alertness subscale of Tang and Murphy (2012). The endogenous variable in this study is media literacy (including dimensions of understanding and content of media, the hidden goals of media, conscious choice of the media, critical view of media and media analysis). The endogenous variable of the study is entrepreneurial alertness (including the dimensions of scan and search, cooperation and communication, and evaluation and judgment). Identifying entrepreneurial opportunities is also a dependent variable of this study. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics indices (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis) and inferential statistics indices (Pearson correlation coefficients, path analysis and confirmatory factor analysis) were used. Amos and SPS software was used to perform statistical tests.
Findings: The results revealed that the effect of understanding media content on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness is 0.19**, which is significant at the 0.01 level according to (t = 3.16). Thus, understanding the content of the media through entrepreneurial alertness has an effect on the identifying entrepreneurial opportunity. The effect of hidden goals of the media on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness is 0.21*, which is significant according to (t = 2.21). Thus, the dimension of hidden goals of the media has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness. The effect of conscious choice of media on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness is 0.61 **, which is significant at the level of 0.01 according to (t = 2.34). Therefore, the dimension of conscious choice of media through entrepreneurial alertness has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities. The effect of the critical view of the media on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness is 0.83**, which is significant at the level of 0.01 according to (t = 3.14). Hence, the critical view of media has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness. The effect of media analysis dimension on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities through entrepreneurial alertness is 0.34*, which is significant at the level of 0.05 according to (t = 2.92). Therefore, the dimension of media analysis through entrepreneurial alertness has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities. Examining the relationship between the three dimensions of entrepreneurial awareness and identifying entrepreneurial opportunity shows that the effect of scan and search on identifying entrepreneurial opportunity is 0.33*, which is significant at the level of 0.05 according to (t = 2.64). Therefore, the dimension of scan and search has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities. The effect of the cooperation and communication dimension on identifying entrepreneurial opportunity is 0.41, which is significant at the level of 0.01 according to (t = 3.32). Therefore, the dimension of cooperation and communication has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities. The effect of evaluation and judgment dimension on identifying entrepreneurial opportunity is 0.52*, which is significant at the level of 0.01 according to (t = 2.17). Therefore, the d cooperation and communication dimension has an effect on identifying entrepreneurial opportunities.
Discussion: The development of media literacy will increase the critical view and spirit of cooperation of people. Media literacy provides the basis for increased identifying entrepreneurs' opportunities. Entrepreneurial alertness strengthens this effect and provides an opportunity to create more chances to identify entrepreneurial opportunities by obtaining useful and up-to-date information.
