English

Background/Objectives: The classification of sciences, a key human effort to organize knowledge, has evolved gradually from ancient times to the present. From early systems by philosophers like Aristotle to modern frameworks utilizing information technologies, this process has been shaped by philosophical, social, and technological changes. This study examines the historical development of these systems, their challenges, and the opportunities emerging from new technologies.

Methodology: This research employs an analytical approach and literature review to examine sources related to the history and challenges of scientific classification, especially in the context of information technologies. Data were collected from reputable Persian and non-Persian databases and analyzed.

Findings: The study identifies five main challenges faced by the classification of sciences: 1. Philosophical challenges, 2. Issues arising from scientific progress and new disciplines, 3. Cultural and social challenges, 4. The diversity of classification systems, and 5. Technological and digital challenges. Despite these obstacles, several opportunities are emerging, such as: 1. Enhanced accessibility and transparency, 2. The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning, 3. Increased international collaboration and knowledge sharing, and 4. Utilization of big data and complex analyses.

Conclusion: Despite ongoing challenges, the classification of sciences has benefited from advancements in information technologies, allowing it to evolve and adapt to contemporary needs. The study emphasizes the importance of developing global standards, flexible classification systems, and leveraging advanced technologies to enhance these frameworks. Ultimately, scientific classification serves to both organize knowledge and foster collaboration in the digital era.
